Mathematicians Boycott Fields Medal Event Over US Policies.

Mathematicians Boycott Fields Medal Event Over US Policies.

Thousands of mathematicians have launched a Fields Medal boycott. They demand that the global event move خارج the United States. The protest targets the upcoming International Congress of Mathematicians, scheduled in Philadelphia this July. This event awards the prestigious Fields Medal.
More than 2,000 academics have signed a petition. They argue that current US policies threaten international participation.

Concerns Over Safety and Access

Organisers, including Ila Varma and Tarik Aougab, raised serious concerns. They pointed to US military actions and strict immigration enforcement. In addition, they warned that visa restrictions could block many participants.
Many scholars fear detention or travel denial. As a result, some have already decided not to attend. Researchers from countries like Iran, Cuba, and parts of Africa face the greatest barriers. Moreover, several academic groups support the boycott. These include the French and Brazilian mathematical societies. They argue that the situation creates unequal access to a global event.

Debate Over Academic Freedom

The International Mathematical Union has defended the US venue. It said in-person collaboration remains essential. Organisers also promised safety measures and online access to sessions. However, critics remain unconvinced. They call online access a weak solution. They also highlight a double standard. In 2022, organisers moved the event from Russia after the Ukraine invasion.
Some experts say hosting the event in the US sends a political message. Others argue that science must stay open and inclusive. This debate reflects wider tensions in global academia. As the Fields Medal boycott grows, pressure continues to build. The final decision may shape the future of international scientific collaboration.
