Turkey Detains 162 Over Social Media Posts on School Shootings

Turkish police have detained 162 people. The arrests relate to two deadly school shootings. The suspects posted controversial content online.

Crackdown on Online Content

Justice Minister Akın Gürlek accused the accounts of sharing footage of the incidents. He said they spread content capable of creating fear. Some also praised the crimes.

Two Tragic Shootings

The first shooting happened on Tuesday. It took place at a high school in the country’s south-east. At least 16 people were injured. The second shooting occurred on Wednesday. It happened in the city of Kahramanmaras. Nine people were killed in that attack.

Funerals and Grief

Hundreds gathered near the city’s main mosque on Thursday. They attended funerals for the young victims. One victim was ten-year-old Zeynep. Her uncle Mahmut spoke to the BBC. He said she was a clever girl who respected others. “Now she is an angel, she flew away,” he said. He also called for more protection in schools. The aunt of another victim also spoke. Her niece Shura was also ten years old. She learned about the death when the news read her name aloud. Three Turkish government ministers are expected to attend the funerals.
