Over One in Three Young UK Men Live with Parents
More than one in three young men in the UK lived with their parents in 2025. That is up from 26% in 2000. The data comes from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
A Growing Trend
Recent studies suggest two main causes. High renting costs are a big factor. Rising house prices also play a role.
Men vs Women
The data shows a clear gender gap. 35% of young men aged 20-35 lived with their parents. Only 22% of young women did the same. However, the rate in both groups has been increasing. In separate research, the ONS found another trend. The rising cost of living is now the most important issue for adults. It ranks above the NHS and the economy.
One Man’s Story
Nathan, 24, lives with his dad. They share a council house just outside Manchester. He works night shifts cleaning and maintaining trains. He has built up savings of £50,000 by not moving out.“If you are lucky enough to live with a mum, dad or grandparent who doesn’t charge you much rent, then you can build up money even on the minimum wage,” he says.
He cooks chillis and stews to take to work. He avoids impulse purchases. He also tries to keep spending on a night out below £20.
