Hungary’s Victorious Tisza Party Prepares Power Transfer
Péter Magyar and his Tisza party have wasted no time. They are preparing for the transfer of power in Hungary. The party won a dramatic landslide last Sunday. They defeated Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz.
A Landslide Victory
Tisza won 52% of the vote. This ends Fidesz’s 16 years of continuous rule. The victory translates into 140 seats. Hungary’s National Assembly has 199 seats in total. Orbán’s Fidesz have slumped from 135 to just 53 seats.
Finalizing the Count
The final count will be ready on Saturday. Recounts will happen in closely tied constituencies. Votes cast abroad will also be included.
Magyar has won a pledge from President Tamás Sulyok. The formation of the new parliament will be brought forward. It will now start the week beginning 4 May. Parliament can then elect the new government.
Combative Interviews and Promises
Magyar also gave combative interviews. He spoke to public service TV and radio. These outlets have largely ignored or attacked him for the past two years. He has promised to pass laws to suspend their news programmes. This will continue until impartial editors can be appointed. All of this will take time. However, the transfer of power has begun.
