Karachi BRT Contract Terminated After Delays on Red Line Project

Authorities have ended the Karachi BRT Contract for Lot 2 of the Red Line project. This section runs from Mosamiyat to Numaish. Officials cited delays and poor performance by the contractor.
TransKarachi confirmed the decision after a recent site visit. A delegation from the Asian Development Bank raised serious concerns. As a result, authorities decided to act quickly.

Delays and Compliance Issues

The visiting team questioned the speed of construction work. In addition, they raised concerns about the quality of work. They also highlighted gaps in health and safety standards.
Therefore, TransKarachi started formal steps to end the agreement. Officials said the contractor failed to meet required benchmarks. Meanwhile, district authorities sealed the contractor’s office.
Police secured the office after receiving clear instructions. Sources said the delegation expressed strong dissatisfaction. This feedback pushed authorities to take firm action.

Project Faces Continued Setbacks

The Red Line project started in 2022 with a 30-month deadline. It was expected to finish by June 2024. However, the project remains incomplete in 2026.
The route has two main sections. Lot 1 runs from the airport signal to Mosamiyat. Lot 2 covers Mosamiyat to Numaish.
Lot 2 has faced repeated issues in recent years. For example, financial disputes stopped work for months. Court action later helped resolve payment problems.
However, delays still affect daily life in Karachi. Commuters face traffic congestion and road disruptions. As a result, frustration continues to grow.
Officials hope this decision will improve progress. They aim to restart work with better performance soon.
