Sindh Health Crisis Deepens as 75% Technical Posts Remain Vacant
The Sindh health crisis is getting worse. More than 75% of top technical posts remain vacant. This shortage comes during multiple disease outbreaks across the province.
Officials say the health management cadre has 70 approved Grade-20 posts. However, 53 positions are still empty. Most vacancies appeared after retirements without timely replacements.
Promotions have also remained pending for six years. As a result, only 17 officers are currently managing the system. This creates serious gaps in planning and oversight.
Shortage Weakens Response
These officers usually handle public health emergencies. They also guide hospitals and coordinate responses. However, the lack of staff limits quick action.
For example, the last major response team was formed in 2018. It addressed cases of Naegleria fowleri. The team monitored water quality and ensured proper chlorination.
In addition, they shared updates with the public. Now, such coordinated efforts are missing. Therefore, communities face higher risks during outbreaks.
Rising Health Challenges
Sindh is currently dealing with several diseases. These include HIV, mpox, measles, malaria, and dengue. Experts warn that weak management worsens these threats.
From January to April, 33 mpox cases were reported. Measles has already caused at least 40 child deaths this year. Moreover, hospitals in Karachi recorded 159 paediatric HIV cases.
The province also reported a death from Congo fever. As a result, pressure on healthcare services continues to grow.
Steps and Delays
Officials admit that promotions have been delayed. However, they say the process is now moving forward. A seniority list will be released soon.
New hiring at senior levels is not allowed under current rules. Still, the department recently hired 2,000 doctors in Grade-17. More lower-level hiring is also planned.
In conclusion, quick action is essential. Without strong leadership, the Sindh health crisis may continue to worsen.
