HEC Approves Dual Degree Programs for Pakistani Universities

Dual degree programs will soon become available in Pakistani universities after the Higher Education Commission approved a new academic framework. The decision will allow students to enroll in two separate degree programs at the same time. Officials said students will not need to stay within the same department or academic field while selecting their courses.
The approval marks an important step in expanding academic opportunities for students across Pakistan. In addition, the new policy aims to improve higher education standards and offer more flexibility in learning.

Students to Benefit From Flexible Study Options

Under the new policy, students can study two different disciplines simultaneously. For example, a student may combine business studies with information technology or media sciences with law. Officials believe the change will help students develop broader skills and improve career opportunities.
The HEC has also approved joint-degree programs for universities across the country. Under this system, students can complete part of their studies at one university and finish the remaining portion at another institution. As a result, students may gain exposure to different academic environments and teaching methods.
Officials explained that universities must sign an HEC-approved memorandum of understanding before launching joint-degree programs. Therefore, institutions will need formal approval and coordination before admitting students.

International Partnerships Also Encouraged

The new framework also supports partnerships between Pakistani and foreign universities. Students will now have opportunities to earn joint degrees through international academic collaborations. Education experts say these partnerships could strengthen research, innovation and global exposure for Pakistani students.
Furthermore, officials believe the initiative will make higher education more competitive and modern. Universities are expected to introduce new degree combinations and international partnerships in the coming months.
The HEC said the reforms reflect its commitment to improving educational quality and creating more opportunities for students nationwide.
