Zong Community Schools Support Education in Tharparkar
Zong has launched a new community school initiative in Tharparkar to improve access to primary education in remote areas. The company is working with Alkhidmat Foundation to establish climate-resilient schools for underserved communities. These schools aim to provide safe, inclusive, and sustainable learning spaces for children with limited access to education.
Pakistan continues to face serious education challenges. Millions of children between the ages of 5 and 16 remain out of school across the country. In Tharparkar, poverty, weak infrastructure, scattered populations, and cultural barriers often prevent children from attending school. Girls in remote villages face even greater challenges in accessing education.
Climate-Resilient Schools Open in Remote Villages
To address these issues, Zong and Alkhidmat Foundation established Chownra Schools in remote villages. The schools are located in Chopni Wasai Pota in Mithi and Sono Ki Dhani in Islamkot. Following community assessments in 2025, both organisations started construction and renovation work to improve educational facilities.
The project included climate-resilient school buildings, furniture, sanitation facilities, learning materials, and secure boundary walls. In addition, the initiative focused on creating child-friendly classrooms for students in underserved communities. Officials said these improvements would help provide a safer and more supportive learning environment.
Initiative Supports Girls’ Education and Inclusion
The programme aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 4 for quality education and SDG 10 for reduced inequalities. Currently, the initiative supports nearly 80 students in the region. Officials also reported attendance rates close to 85 percent.
By establishing schools closer to local communities, the project aims to reduce travel difficulties and improve enrollment rates. Furthermore, the initiative encourages girls’ education and promotes social inclusion. Organisers believe the programme will contribute to long-term educational and economic development in Tharparkar.
