Gilgit-Baltistan Elections 2026: Over 958,000 Voters Cast Ballots Across Region
The Gilgit Baltistan Elections 2026 are underway, with more than 958,000 registered voters heading to polling stations across the region. Voting started at 8am on Sunday and will continue until 5pm. The election will decide the composition of the next Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly and determine which party forms the next government.
Authorities established 1,691 polling stations and deployed more than 7,500 polling staff to manage the electoral process. A total of 396 candidates are contesting the elections, including 130 candidates from 24 political parties and 266 independent contenders. Political parties must secure at least 13 seats to form the government in the 24-member elected assembly.
Caretaker Information Minister Ghulam Abbas said polling began peacefully across Gilgit-Baltistan. He added that voters were actively participating in the democratic process. Abbas also urged citizens to exercise their right to vote and contribute to the region’s development.
Security Measures and Polling Arrangements
Authorities implemented extensive security measures across the region to ensure peaceful elections. Police, Rangers, Gilgit-Baltistan Scouts, and Pakistan Army personnel are performing security duties at sensitive locations.
Chief Election Commissioner Raja Shahbaz Khan visited several polling stations in Gilgit to review arrangements. During his visit, he inspected facilities, met polling staff, and reviewed security measures. He expressed satisfaction with the overall arrangements and directed officials to maintain transparency and neutrality throughout the voting process.
Meanwhile, voters formed long queues outside several polling stations. Election officials reported a steady turnout throughout the day. However, some voters complained about delays and slow polling. In response, the chief election commissioner sought reports from relevant officials.
Political Parties Compete for Power
The Gilgit Baltistan Elections have attracted strong interest from major political parties. The PPP, PML-N, PTI, and IPP all campaigned actively before polling day. PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari led an extensive campaign across the region and called for greater constitutional rights for Gilgit-Baltistan. PML-N leaders promised new infrastructure and development projects. PTI leaders, however, alleged restrictions on their campaign activities. The election outcome will shape the region’s political direction and influence future development priorities in Gilgit-Baltistan.
