Millions of Chinese Students Take Gaokao Exam as University Admission Tests Begin
Millions of students across the country have begun taking the China Gaokao Exam, the national university entrance test that plays a decisive role in higher education admissions. The multi-day examination started on Sunday, drawing students, parents, and educators into one of the most important academic events of the year.
China’s Ministry of Education reported that approximately 12.9 million students registered for this year’s exam. Candidates will complete tests in Chinese, mathematics, English, science, and humanities. Officials will release the results later this month.
Outside examination centres in Beijing, students arrived carrying identification cards, stationery, and study materials. Many parents accompanied their children and offered words of encouragement before the exams began. Security personnel and police officers also remained on site to ensure smooth operations.
Students Focus on Success
Many students admitted feeling nervous before entering the examination halls. However, months of preparation helped them remain confident. Eighteen-year-old Zhang Xinnan said he felt anxious about the Chinese essay section because recent topics have become more challenging. Despite his concerns, he believed his preparation would help him perform well.
Zhang spent the past year reviewing lessons and completing practice papers. He hopes to pursue a career related to new energy vehicles after completing his studies. Like many students, he views the exam as an important step toward achieving his future goals. Meanwhile, parents waited outside testing centres and watched their children enter the halls. Some wore red clothing, which symbolizes good fortune in Chinese culture.
Changing Views on Education
China has expanded access to higher education significantly over the past few decades. As a result, more families now expect their children to attend university and secure successful careers. However, a challenging job market has influenced public attitudes. Official figures show that youth unemployment remains a concern across the country.
Therefore, many parents now place greater emphasis on physical and mental wellbeing. Some believe academic success should not come at the expense of health.
