Pakistani Seamen Hostage Crisis: Government Accelerates Efforts for Crew Release
The Pakistani Seamen Hostage crisis remains unresolved as the government intensifies efforts to secure the release of 11 crew members held by Somali pirates. Maritime Affairs Minister Junaid Anwar Chaudhry discussed the matter with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar during a telephone call on Monday. Both leaders stressed the need for urgent and coordinated action to ensure the crew’s safe return.
The crisis began on April 21 when armed pirates hijacked the MT Honour 25 off the southeastern coast of Somalia. Since then, the crew has remained in captivity. As a result, Pakistani authorities have increased diplomatic engagement and maintained close contact with all parties involved in the negotiations.
Pakistan Strengthens Diplomatic Engagement
According to the Maritime Affairs Ministry, Chaudhry also contacted Pakistan’s ambassador in Somalia to review ongoing efforts. He emphasized the importance of accelerating measures for the safe and speedy release of the hostages.
The minister said authorities launched efforts immediately after receiving information about the hijacking. He added that the ministry remains in regular contact with the Foreign Office and the Somali embassy. Furthermore, officials continue to monitor developments and coordinate with relevant stakeholders.
Last week, Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi confirmed that Pakistan remains actively engaged in efforts to resolve the situation. He acknowledged that the circumstances remain serious and require careful handling.
Negotiations Continue Amid Security Challenges
Officials say the ship owner continues to lead negotiations with the pirates while coordinating with Somali authorities. Pakistan is supporting these efforts through diplomatic channels and regular communication.
However, authorities face significant challenges in carrying out any direct rescue operation. The vessel reportedly carries highly explosive cargo, which increases the risk to the hostages. Therefore, officials are prioritizing negotiations over force to protect the crew’s safety.
The Foreign Office has also urged the Somali government and the ship owner to ensure that the hostages receive food, clean drinking water, and other essential supplies. Meanwhile, families of the crew members continue to await positive news as efforts for their safe release move forward.
