MUZAFFARGARH: A district and sessions court has sentenced former Member of the National Assembly (MNA) and Awami Raj Party chairman, Jamshed Dasti, to seven years in prison in a fake degree case. The verdict was announced on Tuesday by a district and sessions judge in Multan, who ruled against Dasti in the long-standing case regarding his alleged submission of a forged Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree. The judgment was handed down under Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution, which outline the qualifications and disqualifications for members of parliament.
Dasti, a controversial political figure known for his fiery speeches and populist approach, has previously faced multiple legal challenges. However, the fake degree case has remained one of the most significant hurdles in his political career. The court’s decision is being seen as a major blow to his political future, particularly as Articles 62 and 63 not only led to his prison sentence but also directly affected his eligibility to contest future elections. The case dates back to allegations that Dasti had used a forged academic certificate to contest the general elections. Despite repeatedly denying the charges and terming them as politically motivated, the prosecution presented evidence that convinced the court of his guilt.Legal experts say this ruling underscores the judiciary’s resolve to uphold transparency and accountability within the political system. Political observers believe the verdict could alter the dynamics of local politics in Muzaffargarh, where Dasti has enjoyed considerable support over the years. As of now, Dasti’s legal team has the option to challenge the decision in higher courts, leaving open the possibility of appeals in the coming weeks.
