Amjad Hussain Becomes Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister After PPP Election Victory
Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Amjad Hussain Advocate took oath as the new Amjad Hussain CM of Gilgit-Baltistan on Monday. The ceremony followed the PPP’s victory in the 2026 regional elections. Gilgit-Baltistan Governor Syed Mehdi Shah administered the oath in Gilgit. Hussain became the fifth chief minister of the region after winning the top office unopposed.
PPP highlights strong public mandate
Addressing the ceremony, Hussain said the PPP emerged as the largest political party in the June 7 elections. He thanked voters for placing their trust in the party once again. In addition, he praised the active participation of young people and women during the election campaign.
Hussain said PPP candidates won their respective constituencies with strong public support. He also thanked the people who delivered what he described as a complete victory for the party. According to him, the public had renewed its confidence in the PPP despite the party not leading the federal government.
The chief minister said the relationship between the PPP and the people of Gilgit-Baltistan spans three generations. Moreover, he noted that the party secured a strong mandate in Diamer for the first time. He described the outcome as a sign of growing public confidence in the party’s leadership.
New government to begin its term
Hussain also expressed gratitude to the PPP leadership for its continued support. Furthermore, he thanked the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leadership for allowing the PPP to form the regional government.
No other candidate submitted nomination papers for the chief minister’s office. Therefore, Hussain won the position without opposition. He was elected from the GBA-1 constituency in the Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly elections. In addition, he serves as the president of the PPP Gilgit-Baltistan chapter. The new chief minister now begins his term with the responsibility of leading the region after receiving a fresh public mandate.
