Telenor Ufone Merger May Lead to Hundreds of Job Cuts at PTML

The Telenor Ufone merger is expected to result in hundreds of job cuts as Pak Telecom Mobile Limited (PTML) restructures its workforce. According to sources, the company plans to remove duplicate positions after completing the legal merger. The restructuring process is expected to finish over the next few weeks. As a result, between 300 and 500 employees could leave the organisation.

PTML begins workforce restructuring

Sources said the restructuring will affect several departments. These include sales, marketing, finance, human resources, technology, customer services and administration. Therefore, many employees now face an uncertain future.
Employees who wish to remain with PTML must complete aptitude tests, functional assessments and interviews. The company will use these evaluations to fill positions in the newly merged organisation. Those who qualify will receive appointments based on their preferred roles and available vacancies.
However, employees who do not secure their preferred positions may still receive offers for other suitable roles. They must meet the required competency standards for those positions. Meanwhile, employees who cannot be accommodated after the assessment process will leave the company.
Sources added that affected employees will receive a Voluntary Separation Scheme (VSS), commonly known as a golden handshake. This package aims to support staff during the transition.

Company declines to comment

Director Corporate Communications at PTML, Saad Mustafa Waraich, declined to confirm the reported restructuring plans. He said the company’s current priority is integrating operations, governance structures and internal policies. Therefore, he said PTML could not comment on speculation about internal matters.
Before the merger, Telenor Pakistan employed around 800 people. In addition, nearly 300 Ufone employees had already moved to PTML’s headquarters at 345.
The restructuring has already affected some employees. For example, a senior sales executive recently resigned after failing to secure a role in the merged company. Many employees now await the outcome of the ongoing selection process as PTML continues integrating both telecom operators.
