Borussia Dortmund have launched an internal review of midfielder Felix Nmecha’s recent social media posts mourning the death of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. The club will also seek a private discussion with Nmecha to gain clarity, though no public sanctions are being planned at this time.
Nmecha, 24, initially posted a message on his Instagram story that read: “Rest in peace with God. Such a sad day.” After backlash from fans, he edited the text to: “May the Lord the Kirk family in this time with special grace. Jesus is the true path to peace and love.”
In a now-deleted story, Nmecha described Kirk as someone who “peacefully stood up for his convictions and values.” He also called celebrating the assassination of a father and husband “truly evil”, saying the incident highlights, in his view, how much people need Christian values.
Supporters reacted strongly, especially BVB fans critical of the player’s history of controversial posts. Dortmund confirmed they will internally examine whether Nmecha’s conduct aligns with the club’s values, and stress that public statements or penalties are not under consideration for now.
Nmecha, who has previously been involved in controversies over posts perceived as homophobic or transphobic, defended his recent posts by saying his intent was to express condolences and that hatred and violence are never the answer. He emphasised that expressing sympathy should not be condemned, even if someone disagrees with the views of the deceases
