Daily Daylight May Lower Dementia Risk, New Study Finds

Daily exposure to natural daylight may lower the risk of dementia, according to a new study published in the medical journal General Psychiatry. Researchers in China found that spending some time in sunlight or a bright environment each day could reduce the risk of developing dementia by 15% to 25%.

Study Finds Strong Link Between Light and Brain Health

The researchers followed 87,600 adults for eight years. During the study, they examined how daily light exposure affected brain health over time. The results showed that people who spent most of their days in dim environments faced a higher risk of dementia. In contrast, participants who regularly received a healthy amount of natural daylight had a significantly lower risk.
The findings suggest that light plays an important role in supporting brain function. In addition, regular daylight exposure may help maintain healthy sleep patterns and improve the body’s internal clock. These factors are known to influence memory, learning, and overall cognitive health. Therefore, spending time outdoors during the day could become a simple habit that supports long-term brain wellness.

Daylight Benefits Night Owls the Most

Researchers also discovered that daylight offered greater benefits for people who usually stay awake late at night or spend long hours under artificial lighting. For these individuals, regular exposure to natural light during the day appeared to reduce the harmful effects linked with disrupted sleep schedules.
However, the researchers noted that more studies are needed to understand exactly how sunlight protects the brain. Even so, the findings encourage people to include more daylight in their daily routines whenever possible. For example, taking a morning walk, sitting near a sunny window, or spending time outdoors may help improve overall health. As a result, these simple lifestyle changes could lower dementia risk while also supporting better sleep, mood, and cognitive function. Although sunlight alone cannot prevent dementia, combining healthy habits with regular daylight exposure may contribute to better brain health over time and improve quality of life for many people worldwide.
