Cyclosporiasis Outbreak Expands Across US States
The cyclospora outbreak investigation has expanded across the United States as health officials continue tracing infections linked to recalled shredded iceberg lettuce. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are examining new cases reported in several states. As a result, officials are urging consumers to avoid affected products while the investigation continues.
Investigation Expands to More States
The outbreak now involves nine states, including Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. According to the FDA, 1,947 people have developed infections caused by the Cyclospora parasite after possible exposure at Taco Bell restaurants. In addition, at least 98 people required hospital treatment. However, no deaths have been reported so far.
Health departments in Oklahoma and several other states continue working with federal agencies to identify additional linked cases. Meanwhile, Nebraska, Rhode Island, New Mexico, and Maryland said they have not found evidence connecting their reported infections to this multistate outbreak. Furthermore, North Carolina officials believe their recent increase in cases is likely linked to other fresh produce, including parsley, cilantro, and lettuce.
Recall and Public Health Advice
Michigan remains the hardest-hit state and recently reported 8,176 probable infections, with hundreds of new cases added in one day. Meanwhile, New Hampshire confirmed illnesses linked to recalled lettuce served at a hospital cafeteria. Oregon also identified two travel-related cases connected to the outbreak.
On July 17, Taylor Farms recalled shredded iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico. The recalled products were supplied to restaurants, retail stores, and food service businesses across several states. In response, the company temporarily closed its processing facility in central Mexico linked to the investigation.
The FDA continues advising consumers, restaurants, and food service providers to avoid all recalled lettuce products. Therefore, anyone experiencing prolonged diarrhoea, stomach cramps, nausea, or fatigue after eating recalled lettuce should seek medical advice promptly and follow local public health guidance
