The pilot study involved 47 women aged 50 to 79 who were living with overweight or obesity. All participants followed a reduced-calorie diet for six months. In addition, one group ate only between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., while the other group spread meals across about 12 hours. Both groups lost around seven kilograms during the study.
Better Brain Function Linked to Meal Timing
Researchers found that women following restricted eating hours performed better in spatial planning and problem-solving tests. They also showed fewer mistakes in some memory and learning tasks. However, both groups achieved similar results in multitasking and reaction speed tests. Scientists described the improvements as modest but encouraging.
Experts believe meal timing may affect brain health through circadian rhythms, metabolism, blood sugar control, and inflammation. Therefore, avoiding food for at least four hours before bedtime could offer additional health benefits. Previous studies have also linked earlier evening meals with healthier weight, blood pressure, and metabolic markers.

Researchers plan to investigate why meal timing influences cognitive health. They hope larger studies will confirm these findings and explain the biological reasons behind them. Until then, experts recommend viewing the results with cautious optimism.
