PMDC Warns Pakistani Students Against Joining Afghan Medical Colleges
The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has warned Pakistani students against seeking admission to Afghan medical colleges. The council said graduates from these institutions cannot obtain registration to practice medicine in Pakistan. Officials urged students to verify the recognition status of foreign medical colleges before applying. They said informed decisions can prevent future academic and professional problems.
PMDC Explains Registration Restrictions
The PMDC stated that graduates from medical institutions in Afghanistan cannot register with the council. As a result, they cannot receive a license to practice medicine in Pakistan. Officials said the restriction applies because the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) does not recognize medical institutions in Afghanistan.
Therefore, the PMDC will not allow graduates from these institutions to appear in Pakistan’s National Registration Examination (NRE). Without passing the NRE, graduates cannot complete the registration process required to practice medicine in the country. The council stressed that students should understand these requirements before selecting a foreign medical institution.
Officials advised students to avoid making admission decisions without checking the recognition status of the institution. In addition, they encouraged families to seek accurate information before investing time and money in overseas medical education.

The PMDC asked prospective students to confirm whether a foreign medical college holds ECFMG recognition before submitting applications.
