Cancer-Fighting Gum Shows Promise Against HPV and Oral Cancer Microbes

Researchers have developed Cancer-Fighting Gum that may help reduce harmful microbes linked to head and neck cancer. Scientists tested the gum using oral samples from patients. The results showed a sharp drop in HPV and two dangerous bacteria. Therefore, the discovery could support future cancer prevention and treatment. The study appeared in Scientific Reports and was led by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania.

How the Gum Targets Harmful Microbes

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma is a common cancer affecting the mouth and throat. Unfortunately, many patients receive a diagnosis after the disease has advanced. Current treatments often improve survival only slightly. Therefore, researchers continue searching for better options.

The chewing gum contains FRIL, a natural antiviral protein from lablab beans. Scientists tested it against human papillomavirus, also called HPV, and two harmful bacteria, Porphyromonas gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum. These microbes are strongly linked to oral cancer. Researchers found the gum reduced HPV by 93% in saliva and 80% in oral rinse samples. In addition, an improved version contained protegrin, which almost eliminated both harmful bacteria after one dose.

Why the Findings Matter

Researchers also discovered that the treatment protected healthy mouth bacteria. However, many traditional cancer therapies can damage beneficial microbes. Keeping a balanced oral microbiome may improve overall oral health during treatment.

Experts believe this gum could become an additional therapy alongside existing cancer treatments. It may also help prevent infections that increase cancer risk. However, larger clinical trials are still necessary before doctors can recommend it widely. Even so, the findings provide fresh hope for safer and more affordable oral cancer care. If future studies confirm these results, this simple chewing gum could become a valuable tool for protecting oral health and reducing cancer-related infections worldwide.
