The latest rankings evaluated 1,614 universities worldwide. They measured research performance, publications, and citation impact, highlighting institutions that continue to lead global engineering research and innovation.

Singapore Leads Southeast Asia in Engineering

Nanyang Technological University ranked second globally, finishing behind China’s Tsinghua University. Meanwhile, the National University of Singapore secured eighth place, reinforcing the country’s strong academic reputation.

Mainland China dominated the engineering rankings with seven universities in the global top 10. In addition, Hong Kong Polytechnic University ranked sixth, making it the only other Asian institution in the top tier outside mainland China and Singapore.

The highest-ranked university outside Asia was the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which placed 12th. Meanwhile, Switzerland’s ETH Zurich ranked 14th, while the United Kingdom’s Imperial College London secured 19th place.

The U.S. News rankings assessed universities using 12 performance indicators. Researchers evaluated engineering publications produced between 2020 and 2024, along with citation data collected through November 25, 2025. Furthermore, universities had to publish at least 250 engineering research papers during the five-year period to qualify.

Regional Universities Continue to Improve

Singapore also placed a third institution in the rankings. The Singapore University of Technology and Design ranked 255th worldwide, adding to the country’s growing academic presence.

Malaysia recorded the highest number of ranked universities in Southeast Asia, with 19 institutions making the list. Vietnam followed with 11 universities, led by Duy Tan University, which ranked 220th globally.

Beyond engineering, Singaporean universities also performed strongly in artificial intelligence, computer science, electrical and electronic engineering, and materials science. These results highlight the country’s continued investment in research, innovation, and world-class higher education.
