SK Hynix Investment to Build Two New Chip Plants

SK Hynix Investment to Build Two New Chip Plants

SK Hynix investment plans now include two new memory chip plants in South Korea. The company will spend 54 trillion Korean won, or about $38.1 billion. The move comes as demand for memory chips continues to rise. AI data centers need huge amounts of advanced memory for powerful computing systems. The company will invest 35.2 trillion won in its Yongin facility. It will also spend 19.1 trillion won on a new plant in Cheongju. SK Hynix named the Yongin facility “Y2.” The Cheongju plant will carry the name “M17.”

AI Demand Drives Memory Prices

Memory prices have surged because supply remains tight. At the same time, AI companies continue to build large data center networks. High bandwidth memory, known as HBM, plays a major role in this growth. Companies such as Nvidia use HBM in advanced AI systems. Therefore, major memory producers have attracted strong investor interest. SK Hynix, Samsung, and Micron have all seen their shares gain sharply. However, SK Hynix faces growing competition in the memory market. Samsung recently regained the top position in global DRAM market share. DRAM remains one of the most important memory types. Demand for this technology has increased with AI and data center growth.

New Plants Target Future Demand

The Y2 facility will become part of the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster. SK Hynix plans four fabs within the large industrial complex. Construction at Y2 should begin in July 2027. The first cleanroom should open in June 2029.

The plant will produce HBM and other advanced DRAM products. A cleanroom provides the controlled environment needed for chip production. Meanwhile, M17 will focus on NAND memory. SK Hynix expects demand for NAND products to grow rapidly. Construction at M17 should begin in February 2027. Its first cleanroom should open in December 2028.

Long Term Chip Strategy

The new projects form part of SK Hynix’s wider expansion strategy. The company announced this master plan last year. Under the plan, SK Hynix expects to invest 600 trillion won in Yongin. It also plans to spend 100 trillion won expanding its Cheongju production base. Industry analysts expect global memory supply to grow through 2028. However, demand could rise even faster.

As a result, memory prices may remain firm for several years. SK Hynix believes supply capacity will become a key advantage during the AI boom. The company says timing will matter as customers seek large volumes of memory. These projects aim to prepare its production network for future AI demand.
