Iran Welcomes Makkah Security Agreement Between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye
Iran has welcomed the Makkah security agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye. Tehran says the deal reflects changing views about regional security and reliance on outside powers.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei made the remarks during a weekly briefing on Monday. He said countries in the region increasingly want to develop their own security arrangements.
Tehran signals support for regional cooperation
The agreement, signed in Makkah last Friday, seeks stronger collective deterrence. It also treats an attack on one signatory as an attack on all three countries.
Baqaei said recent regional developments had encouraged countries to reconsider their security choices. However, he stressed that Tehran had no reason to view the agreement as a threat.
He highlighted Iran’s religious, historical and civilizational links with Pakistan, Turkiye and Saudi Arabia. Furthermore, he said regional plans could improve stability when they reflect local realities.
The spokesperson also said Tehran supports security mechanisms based on regional cooperation. Such arrangements, he added, should remain free from destructive foreign intervention.
Pakistan shares details with Iran
Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar later discussed the agreement with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Dar explained that the initiative aims to strengthen strategic cooperation and promote peace across the region.
He also clarified that the agreement targets no country. In addition, it does not replace existing bilateral or multilateral arrangements.
Dar previously described the initiative as purely defensive. He also said it remains open to other regional countries that accept its core principles.
Meanwhile, Dar discussed the agreement with officials from Kuwait, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Guinea-Bissau. He also spoke with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand about regional developments.
The discussions focused on peace, stability and stronger international cooperation. At the same time, Pakistan continues diplomatic engagement with neighbouring and partner countries.
Iran said its plans for regional security remain open to updates. Baqaei expressed hope that regional states would learn from recent developments and choose stronger collective approaches.
