Northern Ireland Smartphone Ban in Schools Under Review

Northern Ireland could introduce a Northern Ireland Smartphone Ban in schools. Education Minister Paul Givan is consulting on possible new legislation. Pilot scheme shows mixed results

Several Northern Ireland schools have already tested phone restrictions. The pilot required pupils to place their phones inside magnetic pouches. The scheme involved nine schools and cost £250,000.However, researchers from King’s College London found some positive results. Teachers reported less classroom disruption and better interaction between pupils.

Students had more mixed views about the restrictions. Younger pupils also followed the rules more readily than older students.The study found little overall change in student wellbeing. However, some pupils reported lower symptoms of anxiety and depression.Researchers also urged teachers to limit their own smartphone use. They said staff should set a good example for pupils.

The researchers also suggested more flexible rules for older students. Schools could allow them to use phones for educational purposes.Stephen Moore, principal at Friends’ School Lisburn, supports a school-wide ban. He said the policy encouraged pupils to interact with others and solve problems independently.He also said students had responded positively to the new rules. In his view, the benefits clearly outweigh the disadvantages.

Minister seeks views on possible law

Givan says schools need a consistent approach across Northern Ireland. He noted that many schools already have strong phone policies.The minister has opened a 12-week consultation on possible legislation. Parents, pupils, teachers and school leaders can share their views.Officials have not yet explained how the proposed law would work. The Department of Education plans to publish more details on Thursday.
