UK Telecom Upgrades Face AI Traffic Challenge

UK Telecom Upgrades Face AI Traffic Challenge

The UK telecom upgrades need to accelerate as AI adoption continues to grow. Industry leaders warn that networks may struggle with rising AI-related traffic.

AI growth already drives demand for powerful data centres and energy resources. However, experts say telecom networks also need major improvements. The UK’s full-fibre rollout has improved broadband access across the country. Mobile network upgrades, however, have not moved at the same pace.

5G Networks Face Growing Pressure

A recent Which? analysis placed UK mobile coverage behind every EU member state. The UK also ranked below other G7 nations for coverage performance. The analysis ranked the UK 57th globally for overall network performance. It also placed the country 70th for download speeds. Network reliability ranked 55th worldwide in the analysis. This reliability supports activities such as video calls, streaming, and online gaming.

VodafoneThree Warned Abo The Growing Pressure Andrea Brown’ said mass AI use could create network problems similar to crowded public events.

AI-powered devices could increase that pressure further. Experts expect AI features to become common across devices within several years.

Another telecom executive called connectivity a future national competitiveness issue. Therefore, network performance could directly affect the UK’s ability to compete.

Planning Delays Slow Network Improvements

UK mobile operators continue investing heavily in standalone 5G technology. VodafoneThree has committed £11 billion toward network improvements. However, planning rules can delay upgrades to existing infrastructure. VodafoneThree says most required upgrades involve existing sites. Around 96% of its planned upgrades involve current locations. More than half still require some form of planning approval. Industry leaders want faster planning decisions and fewer regulatory barriers. They also argue that telecom networks deserve similar support to other critical infrastructure. The UK could face greater connectivity demands as AI adoption expands. Therefore, faster telecom upgrades may become essential for supporting future digital services. Without timely improvements, experts warn that network limitations could hold back AI growth and economic competitiveness.
