Instagram Redesign Puts Reels and DMs Front and Center

D00102

Instagram has rolled out a redesigned navigation bar that reflects how people use the platform today. The new layout puts Reels and direct messages (DMs) at the center, marking a big step away from the app’s original photo-first identity.
Previously, the bottom bar included Home, Search, the “+” button for posts, Reels, and Profile. Now, the post button sits in the top left corner.

This shift makes space for DMs in the bottom bar. As a result, users can now open private chats with a single tap instead of searching at the top.
Reels also get more visibility. Short videos drive much of Instagram’s growth, and the redesign shows Instagram doubling down on that trend. The company says people spend more time watching Reels and sharing them in DMs. These changes match real user behavior.
For longtime users, the redesign may feel like another move away from Instagram’s photo-sharing roots. But for younger audiences, used to short-form video and private chats, the update could feel smoother and more intuitive.
The rollout is gradual. Not all regions will see the new navigation bar right away. Still, Instagram’s focus is clear: speed, simplicity, and easy access to the most popular features.
Reactions to the redesign are mixed. Some users welcome the faster access, while others miss the classic setup. One thing is certain: Instagram’s new layout highlights Reels and DMs, showing where the platform is headed.
