The Lord of the Rings franchise is getting another video game. Fans have had mixed experiences with previous releases. Earlier this year, Tales of the Shire launched but faced criticism from both fans and critics. A few years ago, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum also released and was widely considered one of the worst games of the decade.
Not all games have failed. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor proved that a high-budget, well-made Lord of the Rings game is possible. Now, another developer is reportedly taking a shot at the franchise with significant funding behind it.
What We Know About the New Game
Insider Gaming reports that the mystery developer has been working on the game since last year. Sources claim that the Abu Dhabi Investment Office could contribute around $100 million in funding. The deal is not finalized but may be made official soon.
Details about gameplay remain scarce. Sources say it will be a third-person action game designed to “compete with Hogwarts Legacy.” While unclear, this likely indicates a game with large scope, ambitious world-building, and immersive action.
If confirmed, this would be the first major, big-budget Lord of the Rings game in years. Embracer Group owns the IP and has several talented studios, including Dambuster Studios, developers of Dead Island 2, and Warhorse Studios, developers of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. These teams bring experience in creating detailed worlds and strong gameplay.
Fans will be watching closely. After past disappointments, expectations are high. This new project could finally deliver the epic experience the franchise deserves.
