Climbing Games Are Taking Over

The climbing game genre is rapidly gaining attention worldwide, offering players more than just the thrill of reaching a mountain peak. These games, ranging from realistic mountaineering simulators to lighthearted survival adventures, explore both the challenge of climbing and the inevitability of falling.

At their core, climbing games symbolize persistence — the mountain stands as an obstacle representing fear, struggle, or hopelessness, while every step upward reflects resilience. But just as important are the moments of failure: slipping, tumbling, or crashing back down. These falls often create the most powerful reactions in players, whether through laughter in co-op chaos like PEAK or frustration in survival-focused Cairn. Without the constant threat of falling, the sense of accomplishment at the summit wouldn’t feel nearly as rewarding.

Several standout climbing titles are currently making waves:

  • Cairn – A survival-driven climbing simulator from The Game Bakers (creators of Furi). Players can climb anywhere, manage resources, forage, heal wounds, and rest under the stars. It features music by renowned composers like The Toxic Avenger and Martin Stig Andersen. Releasing on November 5 for PS5 and Steam, with a demo already available.
  • Baby Steps – A hilarious physics-based adventure where players guide Nate, a man in a gray onesie learning to walk and climb toward a distant mountaintop. Developed by Maxi Boch, Gabe Cuzzillo, and Bennett Foddy, and published by Devolver Digital, it’s set to launch on September 23 for PS5 and PC.
  • PEAK – A multiplayer co-op climbing game with simple visuals but tough, ever-changing mountain maps. Featuring daily updates, proximity voice chat, and ghost lives after death, it has become a trending hit on Steam this summer, priced at just $8.

Other celebrated mountain-climbing titles like Jusant, Celeste, GIRP, and Journey continue to influence the genre’s growth.

Ultimately, climbing games remind us of a universal truth: falling is as much a part of the journey as reaching the top. The stumbles and slips give context to every victory, turning the climb into a meaningful experience for players worldwide.
