India’s Single-Teacher Schools Reveal a Deep Education Crisis

India’s Single-Teacher Schools Reveal a Deep Education Crisis

In India today, thousands of children study in single-teacher schools, where one teacher handles every subject and class. According to the Education Ministry’s 2024–25 data, there are over 1,04,000 such schools nationwide. This figure reveals a harsh truth about the nation’s education system.
Nearly 3.4 million students depend on these lone teachers. Andhra Pradesh leads in numbers, followed by Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep. The education budget is limited, and misuse of funds adds to the crisis. As a result, teachers face impossible expectations—teaching multiple subjects while managing paperwork and administrative duties.

A System in Distress

Even though the number of single-teacher schools has dropped slightly, the scale remains alarming. Imagine one person teaching science, math, and languages—while also handling mid-day meals and attendance. How can quality learning happen in such conditions?
This issue affects both rural and urban schools. Many still lack qualified teachers, labs, and learning materials. The National Education Policy 2020 promises inclusivity, yet without strong foundations, reforms stay on paper.

A Call for Urgent Action

Experts say India must treat education as a national priority. Recruitment should be transparent and timely. Remote schools need proper staffing and digital tools to support learning. Teachers must also receive continuous training and respect as true nation-builders.
If millions of children rely on one teacher, it’s not just poor management—it’s a moral crisis. True progress will come only when every child has access to quality education and every teacher receives the support they deserve.
