WhatsApp Adds Passkey Encryption for Chat Backups

WhatsApp is taking another big step toward stronger privacy. The platform is introducing Passkey encryption for chat backups, giving users a safer and simpler way to secure their data.
With this update, users can lock down their chats and protect personal information more effectively. Passkeys use fingerprint or face ID login to confirm identity. Unlike passwords, they store cryptographic data only on your device. This makes access safer and harder to hack.

How WhatsApp Passkey Encryption Works

WhatsApp explained that Passkeys let users encrypt chat backups using biometrics or screen lock codes. There’s no need to remember long passwords or 64-digit keys. With just a tap or a glance, your chat backups become as secure as your personal messages and calls.
Cybersecurity experts have long supported Passkey access. It reduces phishing risks and keeps login credentials private. Therefore, this new feature gives WhatsApp users another layer of protection.

Balancing Privacy and Regulation

Data security has always been a key focus for WhatsApp. However, regulators continue to push for back door access to monitor potential criminal activity. Critics claim encrypted chats can hide illegal behavior. Even so, WhatsApp has consistently refused to weaken user privacy.
This new Passkey system strengthens that stance. It ensures only the user can access their chat backups.
WhatsApp says Passkey-encrypted backups will roll out gradually in the coming weeks. To activate it, go to Settings > Chats > Chat Backup > End-to-End Encryption once the option appears
