Dutch Scientific Coalition Urges Billions in Education and Innovation Investment
Scientific organizations across the Netherlands are urging the new Cabinet to commit billions of euros to education, research, and innovation. They believe this investment will strengthen the country’s knowledge economy and help early-stage entrepreneurs grow their businesses.
The call comes from the Knowledge Coalition, a major alliance representing universities, applied sciences institutions, vocational schools, university hospitals, and research bodies. It also includes the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO), and business groups VNO-NCW and MKB Nederland.
A Push for Long-Term Investment
The coalition is requesting an additional €2 billion in public funding next year, increasing to €3.5 billion by 2029. Their goal is to secure stable, long-term investment in research and innovation.
Without consistent funding, the group warns, the Netherlands risks falling behind its neighbors. Spending on knowledge, science, and innovation has already declined in recent years.
Marcel Levi, Chair of the Knowledge Coalition, explained that the upcoming elections offer a chance for real change. “We have seen growing recognition of the value of knowledge and innovation,” he said.
Restoring Support for Higher Education
The departing government cut budgets for higher education, sparking criticism from political parties including D66, CDA, and JA21. These groups argue that education and research drive the nation’s competitiveness and sustainability.
The coalition’s proposal aims to rebuild that foundation. By investing in education and supporting entrepreneurs, the Netherlands can continue to lead in science, technology, and innovation—securing a stronger future for generations to come.
