Cape Verde Teachers’ Unions Push for Inclusive Quality Education Through ‘Go Public! Fund Education’ Campaign

PRAIA, Cape Verde Education unions in Cape Verde have intensified their advocacy for inclusive and high-quality public education through the Go Public! Fund Education campaign.
The initiative, supported by Education International (EI), is led by Abraão Borges, President of SIPROFIS, the largest teachers’ union under the Cape Verdean Federation of Teachers (FECAP). Borges also represents Zone 2 of EI’s Africa region, making Cape Verde’s movement part of a broader continental effort for education reform.

Strengthening Public and Early Childhood Education

The unions have organized several activities across the islands of Boa Vista, Maio, and Santiago, promoting the value of public education and early childhood development. Meetings were held with government and municipal authorities to advocate for increased funding and improved conditions for educators.
Negotiations are also underway to enhance teachers’ working conditions and salaries, as well as to support preschool educators who remain under municipal supervision.

Continuing International Solidarity

The campaign spans several islands and will conclude on November 19, 2025, with a national advocacy and mobilisation training session for teachers and union representatives.
Borges reaffirmed that FECAP/SIPROFIS will continue its push for public education and increased funding, with backing from Education International, the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries, and other national and international partners.
