AKUNGBA-AKOKO: The Students’ Union of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA), has stepped up its campaign against what it calls the “exorbitant” cost of student accommodation in the university’s host community.
The union’s intervention follows mounting complaints from students, who say rent prices for off-campus housing have surged beyond affordable levels. Many students argue that the high cost of accommodation threatens their welfare and puts additional financial pressure on families already struggling with economic hardship.
In a statement issued by the union’s Chief Press Secretary, Awolumate Oluwaseun, on behalf of union president Comrade Salami Akeem, popularly known as Ologbon, the union reaffirmed its determination to protect students from exploitation.
The statement noted that the union president, in the company of the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Samson Laleye—represented by Sub Dean, Mr. Ikuegbebe Segun—carried out an inspection of a student lodge near the Glo Mast in Akungba. The visit was prompted by reports that a single-room self-contained apartment was being rented for as high as ₦500,000.
Describing such pricing as unfair and unsustainable, the union pledged to engage landlords, community leaders, and relevant authorities to find lasting solutions. It stressed that accommodation costs should reflect economic realities rather than be driven by profiteering motives.
The Students’ Union assured the student community that it would continue to take proactive steps to ensure fair, transparent, and affordable housing, while reaffirming its role as a strong advocate for student welfare.
