: AI Research Reveals Schizophrenia’s Genetic Puzzle

AI research is helping scientists explore the genetic puzzle behind schizophrenia. New findings show how genetic changes may work together.

The disorder does not come from one gene or mutation. Instead, hundreds of variants can affect brain development, neuron communication, and brain connections.

Researchers used AI models to study genetic activity. These tools can reveal links that traditional methods may miss. Therefore, scientists can examine biological networks instead of isolated changes.

A wider genetic map

A study published in Nature Genetics identified 766 genes linked with the disorder. Among them, 641 had not appeared in earlier studies.

Long-range genetic signals helped identify many genes. The findings suggest that genes may work as an interconnected network. As a result, scientists can explore how biological processes combine to influence risk.

Researchers compared the discovery with lighting a neighborhood. Previously, scientists could see only a few houses. Now, they can observe a larger part of the genetic map.

Why the findings matter

The research examined genetic data from more than 102,000 people. Scientists studied brain tissue from six regions and hundreds of donors.

The World Health Organization estimates that about 23 million people live with schizophrenia. Family history can increase risk, but it does not determine whether someone develops the disorder.

Some people with affected relatives never develop it. Others receive a diagnosis without known family history. This variation highlights the role of genetics.

Toward better understanding

Schizophrenia can affect how people perceive reality. Symptoms may include hallucinations, delusions, social withdrawal, reduced motivation, and memory difficulties.

The findings may help scientists understand these symptoms. In addition, mapping connected genes could support research into treatments.

However, AI cannot explain every cause yet. Researchers must confirm these patterns through further studies. Still, the findings provide a foundation for exploring this complex condition.
