Alarming Rise in HIV Cases Among Children in Sindh

Pakistan has seen an alarming rise in HIV cases among children. According to media reports, hospitals in Karachi and interior Sindh are now registering three to four new child patients every week. This trend has raised concerns among health authorities and experts. Early detection and treatment have become more critical than ever.

Rising Numbers Across Sindh

Statistics reveal that 3,995 children in Sindh are registered as HIV positive. In 2024 alone, 568 new cases were reported, with 150 from Mirpur Khas district. Provincial authorities have instructed that every child be screened for HIV. Children diagnosed should receive immediate care at Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) centers. These measures aim to control the spread and provide timely treatment.
Experts point to unsafe injections and unscreened blood as major causes of this increase. They warn that without stricter safety protocols, the situation in Karachi and interior Sindh could worsen quickly. Hospitals are urged to follow proper hygiene and blood screening procedures. Awareness campaigns targeting families and healthcare workers are also recommended.

Preventive Measures and Awareness

In addition to screening and treatment, education plays a key role. Parents should be aware of the risks of unsafe injections and unscreened blood. Health workers must follow safety guidelines strictly. ART centers should remain accessible for all children in need. Moreover, government and community organizations must collaborate to spread awareness. As a result, early detection and preventive measures can save lives and curb the disease’s spread.
Swift action is essential to prevent further rise in cases. Children represent the most vulnerable population, and protecting them requires urgent attention. Communities, hospitals, and authorities must work together to ensure a safe environment for children.
