Ancient Herbal Pill Rivals Modern Antidepressant in Depression Trial
Scientists have tested an ancient herbal formula alongside a popular modern antidepressant in people with depression. The herbal treatment, known as the Yueju Pill, was compared with Escitalopram, a common antidepressant used worldwide.
What the Study Found
Researchers conducted a clinical trial with patients diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). One group received the Yueju Pill, while another received Escitalopram. Both groups also took a placebo version of the other treatment to ensure accurate results.
Both treatments helped reduce depression symptoms. However, only the Yueju group showed a clear increase in a brain protein called BDNF, which supports mood and brain health.
Brain scans revealed that unique brain networks became active in those taking the herbal formula. For example, the visual brain network showed changes linked to better emotional processing. This suggests that the herbal treatment may work through different brain mechanisms than modern drugs.
Why This Matters
The results highlight the power of combining traditional and modern medicine. For example, natural remedies like the Yueju Pill may provide alternative or complementary treatment options for depression. Therefore, this approach could help personalize mental-health care for people who respond differently to standard antidepressants.
What’s Next
Researchers plan to study the herbal pill in larger and more diverse groups. They also aim to explore its long-term effects and better understand how it improves mood. In addition, future studies could identify which patients benefit most from this ancient formula.
