Antalya Tune-Up Triumph: Iran Beat Mali Ahead of World Cup Journey

Iran secured an Antalya Tune-Up Triumph with a 2-0 victory over Mali in a friendly match on Thursday. The result boosted confidence before the team travels to Mexico for the World Cup. As a result, Team Melli heads into the tournament with positive momentum. The match took place in Antalya, Turkiye, where Iran played all four of its warm-up games this year. Midfielder Saeid Ezatolahi opened the scoring before halftime. Later, right back Ramin Rezaeian added a second goal to seal the win. Iran finished its friendly campaign with three victories and one defeat. Therefore, the squad leaves Turkiye encouraged by its recent performances.

Preparation Continues Amid Travel Questions

The friendly matches have been especially important for Iran-based players. Domestic football has remained suspended since late February. The pause followed military strikes that triggered a wider regional conflict. Despite those challenges, the national team continued its preparations. Officials confirmed this week that the squad received visas for Mexico. Consequently, the players are expected to leave for Tijuana on Saturday. Mexico agreed to host Iran’s World Cup base. President Claudia Sheinbaum approved the arrangement after discussions involving tournament logistics. Tijuana will now serve as the team’s headquarters during the competition. However, uncertainty remains over entry into the United States. The squad still needs visas for group-stage matches in Los Angeles and Seattle. Iran will face New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt during the opening phase of the tournament.
Iranian Football Federation President Mehdi Taj recently described the visa situation as a key concern. In addition, tournament officials continue to monitor developments closely. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that players would be allowed to enter the country. However, officials with ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps may face restrictions. Both the United States and Canada classify the organization as a terrorist entity. For now, Iran can focus on its strong finish to preparations and an important World Cup challenge ahead.
