Australian Shares Rise on Iran Peace Hopes Boost

Australia shares rise on Monday as investors react to easing tensions in the Middle East. Sentiment improved after comments about possible Iran peace progress. As a result, confidence returned to the market. The S&P/ASX 200 index climbed 0.5% to 9,019.30 points. It also extended strong momentum from July. Therefore, investors entered the week with a positive outlook.

Banks And Healthcare lead

Financial stocks supported the rally. Three major banks posted gains between 0.2% and 0.8%. In addition, the financial sector index rose by 0.4%. Healthcare and consumer companies also performed well. Both sectors gained around 1% each. For example, 4DMedical led healthcare stocks higher. Similarly, Treasury Wine Estates topped consumer gains. Gold miners added further support to the market. Rising bullion prices helped push the sector up by 0.7%. As a result, defensive stocks attracted investor interest.

Energy Stocks lag Behind

However, energy shares moved in the opposite direction. The sector dropped 1.2% as oil prices declined. Lower oil demand expectations weighed on major companies. Woodside Energy and Santos both recorded losses. They fell by 1.4% and 1.9%, respectively. Therefore, energy stocks limited the overall market gains.

Cautious Outlook Ahead

Investors remain careful despite improving sentiment. Analysts say progress in Iran talks is positive but not certain. As a result, markets continue to show selective risk taking. Interest rate expectations also play a key role. Markets expect no change in the central bank’s rate next week. In addition, chances of a September move remain low. Focus now shifts to the upcoming earnings season. Investors want clear signals about business performance across sectors. Therefore, company results will guide the next market trend. Meanwhile, New Zealand’s S&P/NZX 50 index also rose by 0.6%. This reflects broader regional optimism.
