Bluesky User Growth Slows Amid Fierce Competition

Bluesky User Growth Slows Amid Fierce Competition

The post-Twitter race is heating up between Threads and X. However, Bluesky continues to grow at a slower pace.
On Friday, Bluesky announced that the app has reached 40 million users, up from 38 million in August. While that’s progress, the increase is modest compared to its rivals.
Threads, powered by Instagram’s massive user base, now boasts around 400 million monthly users. Meanwhile, X remains steady with similar engagement numbers. As a result, Bluesky has slipped behind in the competition.
Still, the app has built a loyal community of thoughtful, engaged users who continue to support its growth.

From Rapid Rise to Slower Momentum

Bluesky’s early days were impressive. Until August last year, it had about 5 million users. Then, as some users left X, Bluesky surged.
Between September and November, it gained another 15 million users, hitting 20 million by year’s end. This growth excited investors and the tech community alike.
However, momentum has since slowed. From November 2024 to March 2025, Bluesky added 10 million more users, reaching 30 million. Over the past seven months, it has grown by another 10 million a slower climb.
In other words, Bluesky’s growth rate dropped from about 5 million users per month to 1.4 million. While that’s still significant, it raises questions about the platform’s long-term sustainability especially without ad revenue support.
For now, Bluesky remains a niche favorite in a crowded social media race.
