Chatbots Help Reduce Student Resistance to Technology in Schools

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming education worldwide. It plays a vital role in achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4),quality education for all. However, one challenge remains: many students still resist using new technology. This hesitation can slow learning and block digital progress in classrooms.
A new study in Al-Ahsa, Saudi Arabia, explored how chatbots can help reduce this resistance among high school students. Researchers selected 52 first-year students who showed strong resistance to technology. They were divided into two groups: one interacted with a chatbot, while the other followed traditional teaching methods.

Evidence from the Study

Over two weeks, researchers measured resistance using a 17-item survey. The survey looked at four areas: routine habits, emotional reactions, rigid thinking, and short-term focus. The results were striking. Students who used chatbots showed a significant drop in resistance levels.
The statistical test confirmed this finding, showing a large effect size (t(50) = 11.21, p < .001, d = 2.87).

Why It Matters

The study highlights important lessons for schools and teachers. For schools, chatbots can support a smoother digital transformation. For teachers, they offer a friendly tool to reduce student anxiety. And for students, they create a low-pressure space to build confidence with technology. As a result, chatbots could help make digital learning more inclusive and sustainable, aligning with global goals and Saudi Vision 2030.
