China Begins Sea Trials for Type 076 Sichuan Drone Carrier

China has started sea trials for the Type 076 drone carrier named Sichuan. The Type 076 drone carrier marks a major step forward in China’s naval ambitions. It blends amphibious assault capabilities with advanced drone operations, which creates a new category of versatile warships.
The ship stands out because it uses an electromagnetic catapult. This system allows it to launch drones and heavier aircraft with greater speed and control. In addition, the feature brings carrier-style power to a platform much smaller than a traditional aircraft carrier.

A New Kind of Amphibious Power

Experts say the ship could act as a light aircraft carrier during future missions. For example, it can deploy large groups of unmanned vehicles for surveillance, strike operations, or early warning roles. This approach gives commanders more options without risking crewed aircraft.
Some Chinese outlets suggest it may operate the J-35 stealth fighter. However, most reporting points to its primary role in drone-based missions. Therefore, it appears the vessel will strengthen China’s push toward unmanned aviation at sea.

Ship Trials and Expected Timeline

The sea trials focus on major systems such as power, stability, and overall performance. Engineers are checking how the ship handles different speeds, weather conditions, and mission loads. As a result, each trial helps refine the ship before official delivery.
China expects the Sichuan to join the navy before the end of 2026. In addition, analysts believe the vessel will shape future amphibious strategy in the region. The design signals China’s intent to expand its naval presence with more advanced, tech-driven platforms.
