China Condemns Trump’s 100% Tariff Threat, Warns of Countermeasures
China has condemned Donald Trump’s latest threat to impose a 100% tariff on Chinese goods. The government called it “a typical example of US double standards.”
A spokesperson from the Chinese Commerce Ministry said Beijing would not hesitate to take countermeasures if Trump follows through on his warning. The official added that China is “not afraid” of a potential trade war and will protect its national interests.
Trump’s remarks have reignited global concerns about the future of US-China trade relations, which remain fragile after years of tariff disputes.
Rising Tensions Before Key Meeting
On Friday, Trump criticized Beijing’s move to tighten its export rules on rare earth materials. These materials are crucial for producing advanced technologies like smartphones and electric vehicles.
He accused China of “becoming very hostile” and trying to hold the world “captive” through control of critical resources. As a result, he warned he might cancel his meeting with President Xi Jinping, scheduled later this month.
The Chinese spokesperson dismissed Trump’s accusations, saying the US was provoking economic instability for political gain. Analysts believe that the ongoing tensions could lead to new tariffs, disrupting global supply chains and affecting both economies.
Experts also warn that if neither side backs down, the dispute could evolve into a full-scale trade confrontation. However, diplomatic channels remain open, offering a slim chance for dialogue before the situation worsens.
