Commerce Minister Calls for Citrus Quality Boost to Lift Exports

Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan has reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to improving agricultural exports. He said the government plans to add value, boost innovation, and enhance product quality, especially in the citrus sector.
Jam Kamal noted that citrus, particularly Kinnow, holds a strong position in Pakistan’s export portfolio. Regaining its lost competitiveness in global markets, he said, remains one of the Ministry of Commerce’s top priorities.
He explained that the ministry is working to strengthen every link in the value chain. Therefore, it focuses on farms, processing units, and logistics networks to improve product delivery and quality control. The minister added that better infrastructure and compliance with international standards will make Pakistan’s citrus more appealing to global buyers.

Workshop Promotes Best Practices

The minister shared these views while highlighting the Pakistan Horticulture Development and Export Company’s (PHDEC) participation in the Agri Expo Sargodha held on October 7–8. PHDEC hosted a technical workshop titled “Enhancing Citrus Quality and Export Competitiveness.”
Experts from the Citrus Research Institute (CRI), Sargodha, guided growers on pest control, disease management, and efficient harvesting methods. They also trained participants on post-harvest practices that help reduce spoilage and maintain fruit freshness during export.
The workshop attracted growers, exporters, and researchers from across the citrus belt. Participants appreciated the practical demonstrations and science-based discussions that addressed common industry challenges.
In addition, PHDEC distributed Urdu-language citrus booklets. These booklets help farmers adopt Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and learn advanced orchard management techniques. Officials believe these tools will encourage sustainable farming and improve export quality.
As a result, the commerce ministry expects a sharp rise in citrus export volumes in the coming years. Jam Kamal said the government’s strategy aims to ensure that Pakistani citrus regains its strong global presence.
He added that consistent efforts in innovation, technology, and training can transform Pakistan’s citrus sector into a major export success story.
