It happened during the high-stakes end-of-year season. The US, Canada, and Australia were all affected. The hacking group ShinyHunters reportedly claimed responsibility. The attack targeted Canvas, an academic software. Thousands of schools and universities use Canvas. The system went offline this week.
Recovery and Ongoing Issues
By late Thursday, parent company Instructure posted an update. Canvas was “available for most users”. However, some universities still reported outages on Friday. The attack affected an estimated 9,000 institutions.The University of Sydney told students that “Canvas was unavailable”. It instructed them not to attempt to log in. “We are one of approximately 9,000 institutions impacted,” the university said. “We are still waiting for advice from Instructure.”
