DRC Conflict Hampering Ebola Response, WHO Chief Warns
Ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo is hampering the Ebola outbreak response.
A Catastrophic Collision
The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) issued the warning. Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the east of the country is at the center of a “catastrophic collision of disease and conflict”. The Ebola outbreak in Ituri province is outpacing the response. In a statement posted on X, Tedros said the WHO “cannot build community trust or isolate the sick while bombs are falling”.
WHO Chief to Visit
He is due to arrive in DR Congo on Wednesday. His visit aims to spearhead the response. However, ongoing fighting continues to block access to affected areas.
