Dungeons & Dragons Fans Boycott Inkarnate Over AI Art Policy

J00114

Inkarnate, a leading map-making tool for Dungeons & Dragons, faces backlash over plans to allow generative AI in its third-party marketplace. The company insists it won’t use AI for official assets, but fans say the move crosses a line. Many have threatened to boycott.
For years, dungeon masters have relied on Inkarnate’s browser-based system to design custom maps. Its free version offers basic tools, while a low-cost subscription unlocks advanced features, commercial licenses, and exclusive assets. Many creators call it one of the most user-friendly options available.
The uproar began on September 24 during a Q&A in Inkarnate’s Discord server. CEO Ingmar confirmed that artists could upload AI-generated assets, which would be vetted and labeled. He argued customers should “vote with their wallets” instead of the company banning AI. Reddit user MonstaMaps later shared the exchange, sparking wider outrage.
The announcement came at a sensitive time. On September 19, Inkarnate doubled subscription prices for new users without warning. The company reversed the hike after heavy criticism but lost community trust. The next day, fans spotted an outsourced ad featuring AI art, which fueled more anger.
Reactions spread quickly across Reddit, Discord, and social media. Players and artists accused Inkarnate of ignoring concerns and acting carelessly.
The company has acknowledged the backlash and says it may still ban AI-generated assets. For now, the community is waiting to see what Inkarnate decides next.
