Elon Musk Grokipedia Launch Faces Early Hiccups
Elon Musk has launched Grokipedia, an AI-powered encyclopedia designed to compete with Wikipedia. The new site, built on xAI’s Grok model, briefly crashed after its debut on Monday but returned online a few hours later.
Musk promoted Grokipedia as a smarter, less biased alternative to traditional knowledge platforms. The billionaire claims it will offer more accurate and balanced content than the free web-based Wikipedia.
A Bold Challenge to Wikipedia
The Tesla and SpaceX CEO announced his plan for Grokipedia last month after a suggestion from fellow tech entrepreneur David Sacks, who now serves as the AI and crypto czar in President Donald Trump’s administration.
Musk has long criticized Wikipedia, calling it “woke” and biased for referencing outlets such as The New York Times and NPR. In a post on X, he said the launch marked only “Grokipedia version 0.1,” promising that “version 1.0 will be 10X better.” Still, he claimed the current version already outperforms Wikipedia.
Early Reactions and Features
Archived snapshots show the site was down for several hours after launch. When online, Grokipedia’s homepage displayed a simple search bar against a dark background, showing 885,279 articles in a Wikipedia-like layout.
For comparison, English Wikipedia hosts over 7 million articles, written and edited by volunteers. In contrast, Grokipedia’s content appears fully AI-generated, raising questions about accuracy, transparency, and editorial oversight.
