France Tests Motorway That Charges Electric Cars While Driving
France has launched a groundbreaking trial that could change how we drive forever. The country is testing the world’s first motorway that charges electric cars while they’re moving.
A 1.5 km stretch of the A10 motorway near Paris now features inductive coils hidden beneath the surface. These coils wirelessly transfer energy to electric vehicles including cars, trucks, and buses as they travel normally.
How the “Charge as You Drive” System Works
Developed by Electreon, the innovative “Charge as you drive” project is the first dynamic wireless charging system tested in live motorway traffic. It allows vehicles to recharge on the go without plugging in or stopping.
Early results are promising. The system can deliver peak power above 300 kW and maintain an average above 200 kW in optimal conditions. Therefore, drivers can enjoy smooth, continuous charging during their journey.
A Glimpse Into the Future of EV Travel
If the trial proves successful, this technology could roll out across France and Europe. It could help reduce the size of EV batteries, cut costs, and minimize charging breaks for long-distance trips.
In addition, the system supports sustainability by reducing the strain on stationary charging stations. Although there’s no confirmed date for full implementation, studies for future expansion are already underway.
This project shows how innovation can power a cleaner, more efficient future for electric mobility.
