Gul Plaza Fire Case Delayed as Prosecutors Demand Stronger Evidence
The Gul Plaza Fire Case has entered a new phase after prosecutors returned the initial investigation report to Karachi Police. Officials identified several gaps in the inquiry and directed investigators to gather additional evidence. As a result, the case cannot move forward until police submit a more comprehensive challan. Authorities believe stronger evidence will help ensure transparency and support fair legal proceedings.
The deadly fire shocked Karachi and raised serious concerns about safety measures in commercial buildings. Therefore, prosecutors want investigators to address every missing element before the court reviews the case.
Prosecutors Highlight Investigation Shortcomings
According to the police report, investigators held five individuals responsible for alleged negligence linked to the fire. The challan names market union office-bearers and a shop owner where the blaze reportedly started. Police identified Union President Tanveer Paste, Vice President Huzaifa Ammar Ismail, General Secretary Amin, Joint Secretary Muhammad Ramadan, and shop owner Nematullah in the report.
However, prosecutors rejected the four-page challan due to insufficient evidence. They stated that the report lacked key materials needed to support legal action. In addition, officials noted that investigators did not include the findings of the official inquiry commission.
Prosecutors stressed that the commission’s report could provide important details about the causes and circumstances of the incident. Therefore, investigators must obtain and attach the document before resubmitting the case file.
Police Asked to Collect More Evidence
The prosecution also instructed police to secure CCTV footage from cameras installed around Gul Plaza. Investigators expect the recordings to help establish a clear timeline of events. Consequently, the footage may strengthen the case and clarify how the fire spread.
Officials further pointed out that investigators failed to identify and interview eyewitnesses present near the affected shop. Witness statements could provide valuable information about the moments before the blaze erupted.
Moreover, prosecutors directed the investigation team to gather all missing documentary and digital evidence. Once police complete the additional work, they will submit a revised challan for legal scrutiny. As a result, authorities hope to build a stronger case and ensure accountability for those found responsible.
