Hidden Green Snake Species Discovered in China’s Misty Mountains

Hidden Green Snake Species Discovered in China’s Misty Mountains

A stunning green snake stayed hidden in China’s mountains for decades. However, scientists recently confirmed it as a new species. This green pitviper discovery happened in western Sichuan during wildlife surveys. Researchers found the snake in the biodiversity-rich West China Rain Zone. They later named it Trimeresurus lii, or the Huaxi Green Pitviper. The team honored the ancient philosopher Laozi with the species name. In addition, researchers linked the discovery to nature conservation efforts in the region.

Genetic Tests Confirm a Hidden Snake Species

Scientists from the Chengdu Institute of Biology led the research. For years, experts confused the snake with the bamboo pitviper because both share bright green scales. However, detailed DNA testing revealed major genetic differences. Researchers also noticed unique physical traits, including smooth head scales.
The Huaxi Green Pitviper became the 58th known species in the Trimeresurus group. Males display red-and-white side stripes and amber eyes. Females, on the other hand, have yellow stripes and orange-yellow eyes. These colorful features helped scientists separate the snake from related species.

Venomous Pitviper Lives Near Mountain Communities

The newly identified snake lives in the humid forests of Mt. Emei and Xiling Snow Mountain. It can grow nearly 80 centimeters long. Like other pitvipers, this species carries venom that may cause dangerous bites. Therefore, researchers warn local communities and visitors to stay cautious.
Scientists published the findings in the journal Zoosystematics and Evolution. They believe many species still remain undocumented in the region. As a result, experts continue field surveys to better understand wildlife diversity. This green pitviper discovery also highlights the importance of protecting fragile rainforest ecosystems.
